National Housing Day: A Call to Action for Our Community
November 21, 2024
As we recognize National Housing Day, it’s essential to reflect on the critical role that housing plays in the well-being of individuals and families in our community. Safe, stable housing is not just a basic human right; it’s the foundation for health, education, and economic stability. Today, we want to celebrate the incredible work being done at our shelter and express our gratitude to those who make this work possible, especially our dedicated Housing Team and the landlords who partner with us.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Housing Team
Our Housing Team plays a pivotal role in guiding our organization toward our mission of working with community to end homelessness, one person at a time. Their unwavering commitment and leadership inspire the individuals we serve daily. Through innovative programming and a compassionate approach, they ensure that we create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
A Special Acknowledgment to Our Landlords
On this National Housing Day, we also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the landlords who work closely with us. Your willingness to partner with our shelter has made a significant difference in the lives of many individuals and families facing homelessness. By offering housing options and understanding the unique challenges faced by those in need, you are not just providing a roof over their heads; you are restoring hope and dignity.
Your partnership with us is a win-win situation. When you choose to collaborate with the DI, you are helping to:
- Increase Housing Stability: By providing housing for individuals in crisis, you contribute to reducing homelessness in our community. Stable housing leads to better health outcomes, improved employment opportunities, and stronger community ties.
- Support Local Initiatives: Your involvement helps bolster local efforts to create a sustainable solution to homelessness. Together, we can work towards comprehensive support systems that assist individuals in rebuilding their lives.
- Enhance Community Well-Being: When we help our neighbors find a place to call home, we foster a sense of belonging and community pride. A stable housing environment leads to safer neighborhoods, reduced crime rates, and a more vibrant community overall.
Join Us in Making a Difference
As we observe National Housing Day, we invite more landlords to consider partnering with our shelter. Whether you have a single unit or multiple properties, your contribution can make a lasting impact. Together, we can provide the support that individuals and families need to thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the DI support landlords? The DI’s housing team works hard to find good matches between people looking for a place to call home and landlords, but the decision to rent is up to landlords. We can also assist in the introduction, walk through, lease signing and arrange planning for the move through our Free Goods Program. We can also help new tenants get settled in their new home and can provide 3-6 months’ follow-up in-home support.
- What happens if a situation is not working out? We know that sometimes, even with the best of intentions, that it is not a good match. While the DI’s housing team can assist with light touch mediation, the tenant is the one on the lease and is responsible under the Residential Tenancy Act of Alberta.
- Can landlords rent to more than one guest of the DI? Yes! Each tenant would sign their own lease and be responsible for covering their rent.
In Closing
On this National Housing Day, let’s commit ourselves to a future where everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. Thank you to our amazing team, and our dedicated landlords for your continued support and compassion. Together, we can create a community where everyone thrives.
