Addictions recovery is a new area of focus for the DI that provides opportunities to connect vulnerable Calgarians (18 years and older) to supports directly within the shelter and is aligned with the DI’s focus on providing recovery-oriented care as an additional pathway out of homelessness.

These programs serve clients of the DI, but also support external referrals.

Withdrawal Management

Program Description 
We provide a safe space to withdraw from alcohol, drugs, or other substances in a medically supported environment, using an abstinence-based approach. Typical length of stay is 5-10 days. The multidisciplinary team works with clients to refer to housing supports, treatment centres, or other recovery-oriented services as part of discharge planning.

– Medically supported withdrawal management guided by a physician and nursing team
– Ongoing withdrawal management assessments
– Assistance with daily medications
– Opioid Replacement Therapy
– Meals and snacks
– Laundry facilities and basic toiletries
– Clothing
– Dormitory-style sleeping arrangements
– In-house group sessions such as Sharing Circles, 12-step group sessions, SMART Recovery group sessions, health education and promotion, and wellness activities
– Access to addictions counseling

Recovery Transition Program

Program Details
We provide a safe space for people to work towards treatment, recovery and housing goals. This program aims to support clients in preparing for their upcoming treatment or housing intake date and offers support such as discharge planning, goal setting, addiction counselling, group facilitation, and referrals to community resources.

Length of stay is up to 3 months depending on progress with recovery goals, health status and wait time for treatment, recovery, and other housing services. The multidisciplinary team will work with clients to refer them to housing supports, treatment centres, or other recovery-oriented services as part of discharge planning. Clients are expected to actively participate in their own discharge planning and in programming.

Eligibility requirements  
Clients must have completed a detox stay prior to program intake and have an upcoming confirmed treatment date or housing intake date (or be on a waitlist).

Riverfront Dynamic Overdose Response Capacity Program

Program Description 
Enhanced services at the Riverfront Shelter area with healthcare professionals available around the clock to increase capacity to respond to drug poisonings and other medical emergencies in and immediately surrounding the Drop-In Centre.

This program is aimed at increasing client and staff safety, having client-centered recovery conversations, and reducing the impact on Urgent Care services in the City of Calgary.
 
Services Offered 
– Specialized area for continuous monitoring of individuals at risk of adverse effects of drug poisonings and other medical events
– Contracted paramedical professionals to support our 24/7 nursing staff
– Allied Health Care professionals available to make connections to internal and external services, such as Recovery Oriented Systems of Care
